Advantages of Preserving Memories to DVD DVDs are Permanent Media What about VHS Tapes? (Why are rental stores switching to DVD?) A DVD cannot lose it's signal like magnetic tape such as VHS Tape. As the magnetic signal weakens your tape image will get dark and lose its sync signal making it difficult to track, causing the appearance of static on your TV screen. VHS tape cartridges contain rollers and reels and run the tape through an obstacle course from one reel to the other. Tapes must be played from start to finish although you can watch through static as you fast forward in search of specific scenes. The VHS tape when loaded into a player wraps around a spinning head. We have all at one time or another had to pull the tape out of the tape deck hoping it comes out without stretching or snapping. Choosing this media for long term storage means taking the risk that the magnetic signal will not be erased by a nearby magnet, and the moving parts won't damage the tape. What About just Keeping the film and watching it? Over time film fades. As the film loses its emulsion the color fades away. If not stored properly it can develop a mold-like coating which degrades the quality of the projection. In storage film is vulnerable to damage from abrasive dust, or spilled liquids. Film breaks and is difficult to splice. It jams in the projector and can burn if stopped in front of the hot bulb. Each time film is handled it is vulnerable to being damaged by the complex machinery of the projector. You must watch the film from beginning to end without the flexibility of skipping to your favorite scenes. It is cumbersome to thread the projector and rewind the film after viewing it. Replacement bulbs often cost more than the original cost of the projector itself, and are becoming increasingly more rare and difficult to locate. A DVD has no moving parts to break or jam or get wrapped around other moving parts. It can't wrinkle or stretch. The DVD image is written safely beneath the surface of the disc, it is not subject to moisture or threatened by nearby magnets or X-ray machines. If the surface gets scratched it can be polished to allow the laser to read through it to the layer where the data is stored. DVDs are Practical to Use With the use of menus and chapter points a properly authored DVD makes it easy to find and view individual movies. Movies on DVD can be paused, fast forwarded, searched at a faster speed forward or in reverse. You can move from chapter point to chapter point throughout a movie to skip to a scene within a movie. Working with the right service you can define your own titles for movies and chapter points within those movies. Discs are easily stored in protective cases which are compact and easy to shelf. And a good Brand Name DVD player has become very affordable |
